Work designatesan external document cited as bibliographic provenance — a book, article, dictionary, page… — shared (title, author, year, editor, URL) and reused by every passage drawn from it.

It is not contested like a piece of reasoning: you can discuss its accuracy, the edition chosen, or the attribution, but the work itself remains a shared provenance.
